Driving After A Night Out (Gloucestershire Constabulary)

by andrewdoherty on 20 December, 2020

We often talk about the dangers of driving after a night out in respect to how much drugs or alcohol a person has consumed. Even the next day after a night on the drink a person can still be over the limit for alcohol and face a minimum 12 month ban, drugs like cocaine and cannabis regularly show up on tests after 5 days since use. What we rarely talk about though is how tiredness can affect your driving. After 18 hours without proper sleep a person will have the same driving standard, concentration and reaction times as someone who has drunk 2 pints of beer and is over the drink drive limit. The person driving the car below had been on a weekend away with friends and had not had a lot of sleep and were driving past Stow on the Wold towards Worcestershire. The driver was travelling at around 60mph on a busy A-road when they fell asleep at the wheel and drifted across the road into an embankment and towards a tree. The driver was not the only passenger in the car. In the rear was the 4 year old son of the driver, strapped into a child seat. The car impacted hard with a tree causing the car to spin around and flip onto its roof. The car impacted at a slight angle meaning it ricocheted off the tree and came to rest a few meters on, if the car had hit slightly more square then police are sure we may have been dealing with a double fatality. In this case both driver and child got out the car with nothing more than minor scrapes and walked away. Both were assessed by paramedics and taken to hospital as a precaution. If you feel tired when you are behind the wheel then pull over to sleep/rest or do some light exercise. If you have had alcohol or drugs then do not get behind the wheel. Please share this message to educate others on the necessity to not drive a car whilst tired or intoxicated.
