How to avoid becoming a victim of courier fraud

by andrewdoherty on 13 May, 2019

Courier fraud is when you’re called on your mobile or landline by someone who claims to be from your bank or the police. The caller might say they have spotted a fraudulent payment on your account and say that your card needs to be replaced. They will ask you to disclose your card details and will arrange for a courier to pick up your card to ‘take it away for evidence’ or to ‘have it destroyed’, but they withdraw money from your account instead.Your bank or the police will never ask you to disclose your card details, PIN number or personal details over the phone. They will also never send a courier to your home to collect your bank card or any other items. If you receive a call similar to the one described above, do not disclose your card details, PIN number or any personal information. Instead you should hang up and call your bank to check whether it is a genuine call. You should use a number known to you and not one provided by the caller. You should wait for five minutes before calling your bank as fraudsters may stay on the line even after you’ve hung up so that when you redial the real phone number you’re still speaking to the same fraudster. If you’ve given your bank details over the phone or handed your card to a courier, call your bank immediately to cancel the card.
